About this care

Dementia care that starts with the person

Some of the people who live at Grafton Lodge are living with dementia. We plan their care around who they are: their routines, their life story and the things that bring them comfort.

Familiar surroundings help. One of our walls is painted as the old Strood Post Office, a local scene many residents remember. Murals like this help people recognise where they are and feel at home.

Activities give each day some shape. We plan them with residents, around what they enjoy and can do: music, baking, painting, arts and crafts, and plenty of celebrations.

Is it right for you?

Dementia care may be right if…

Dementia affects every person differently. This kind of care often helps when home no longer feels safe or manageable. These are some of the situations families come to us with.
  1. Mum is becoming confused or anxious at home, and it's no longer safe for her to be alone.

  2. Dad needs more support, day and night, than the family can give.

  3. You want somewhere small and calm, with people who understand dementia.

What dementia care here includes

  • Care planned around each person's routines and life story
  • A small team who get to know each resident
  • Secure gardens to spend time in
  • Music, baking, painting, arts and crafts
  • Familiar local scenes, like our Post Office mural
  • Care and support, day and night

Getting started

How to arrange care

Taking the first step can feel daunting. It needn't be. Here's what happens, from your first call to moving-in day, with no pressure at any point.
  1. Get in touch

Call us or request a call back for a no-pressure chat about your situation. Ask us anything about the home, the care or the fees.

  2. Come and look round

See the home, meet the team and ask your questions in person. Call first and we'll arrange a time that suits you.

  3. Getting to know them

Before anyone moves in, we find out about their health, their routines and what matters to them, so we can plan their care and be sure we're the right home.

  4. Moving in

Bring photos, ornaments and favourite things to make the room their own. We take moving day at your pace, and keep in touch as they settle.

Questions

Answers to the questions families ask most

Can't see your question? Call us on 01634 722621 and we'll talk it through.

Do you look after people with dementia?

Yes. We care for people living with dementia, including Alzheimer's, alongside our other residents. Call us to talk about your relative's needs, and we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right home.

Is the home safe for someone living with dementia?

The home has secure gardens, a lift between floors and call buttons in every bedroom. Our team gets to know each resident's routines and what helps them feel calm.

What activities are there?

Music, baking, painting, arts and crafts, and celebrations for birthdays and special days. We plan activities with residents, around what interests them and what they can do.

What happens if their needs increase?

We'll talk it through with you openly. We're a residential home, not a nursing home, so if nursing care is ever needed, we'll help you find the right next step.

How much does dementia care cost?

Fees depend on the room and the care someone needs. Call us on 01634 722621 for current fees, and see our fees and funding page for the ways care can be paid for.
